Posting video to a website or blog has become increasingly popular over the past year or two. Producing videos is easy, often times a handheld video camera is all that is needed. And websites, such as YouTube.com, make it easy to upload and embed video into your own website or blog. If you are interested in putting videos on your website, or even if you already do so, there are some things to consider in order to get the most out of this medium.
The first thing to pay attention to, before shooting any video, is the script or 'storyboard' for your video. Think about what it is that you are trying to communicate, who your audience, it and what is important to them. Think about spacing and distance. Determine if your video will need just one camera angle or some close-up and some distance shots. Even if you are not talented at drawing, it can be helpful to sketch in boxes what each 'scene' will look like, who will be where, and the timing of each scene. A written plan is also very helpful when it comes to actually shooting the video. You can check off scenes as they are completed.
Next pay close attention to the production quality of the video. If your video is choppy, too dark, or if there are a lot of distracting noises in the background you will lose credibility quick. If you are producing the video yourself do some test runs first. Check lighting and audio quality. Try to eliminate any unrelated background noises or objects that will draw the viewers attention away from your message. You may even want to use some footage of shows or other events that you already have. Even fifteen or twenty minutes of preparation and planning can make a big difference.
Remember to practice your script ahead of time. Just like an actor in a movie. Practicing your lines and moving through the motions of each scene will give you the confidence to deliver your lines flawlessly. Walk through the production with people who will be in the scene and, if available, camera and lighting operators.
Adding video to your website or blog is an excellent way of showing what you do. It breaks up the text copy and adds an interesting element to your website that will keep the visitors attention. If your video is entertaining people will spread word of it to friends and family, which will increase your exposure to potential clients. Just remember, even though it is relatively easy to add video to your website or blog, don’t underestimate the effort required to produce a good video. Take the time to do it right and you will most certainly see increased traffic and appreciation for your talents.
