Your class plan is one the most important ingredients to a successful class. Below is a chart that you can use to fill in important information for each class you teach. Make two copies and leave one prominently displayed for teachers at your studio. This way, if a substitute is needed, they will have an idea of what the students know and where they are in their training. Keep it up to date and it will make your life and your students lives easier.

How to use it: under the class planner fill in the class name and day and time. In the technique section, write in any steps that have been taught; you can specify what is new and what has been mastered by using highlighters, lighter colors designate that steps are new, darker colors designate that the steps are better known. The same applies with center technique and progressions. For the choreography it is best to document the music, theme and style. It is too time- consuming to write out all the steps, but rather give helpful overall noteshow many total counts are finished, how many are left and where you currently are in the time track of the music. This overview will also be helpful to you as you proceed through the term: Having this information will expedite the creative process for you.

Here is a sample form for a jazz class that is filled out. Even though it is typed in you will hand write it out after each class to make it quick and easy. You can download and print a blank form below. Make multiple copies so you have one for each class.
